This Just In: A Starred Audio Review for 'Louise' from School Library Journal!

Louise, the Adventures of a Chicken. CD. 19:24 min. with hardcover book. Live Oak Media. 2009. ISBN 978-1-43010-688-3. $28.95.
PreS-Gr 2—Pirates! Shipwrecks! Lion attacks! Chicken-napping! Louise is a chicken with a yen for adventure. She slips away from the humdrum world of the farm and sets out to sea, only to be captured by pirates and nearly fricasseed. Home sounds good, but adventure calls again as she joins the circus and does a daring high-wire act that ends with her nearly becoming a lion's lunch. Again the farm seems a safe retreat, but when you have drumsticks itching for adventure you know you'll be off again. This time our saucy French hen follows in the footsteps of classic adventurers such as Indiana Jones, visits a fortune-teller, is captured by a tall dark stranger, and frees fellow chickens so that they, too, can cluck free! When she returns home, she tells the other chickens of her adventures and they are appropriately impressed and horrified. Home is a welcome, safe, refuge—but can Louise really settle down there? This delightful feathered frolic by Kate DiCamillo (HarperCollins/Joanna Cotler Books, 2008) is masterfully performed by Barbara Rosenblat who reads the story with fine pacing and energy and creates unique personalities, voices, and accents for each character. Light background music and sound effects make this a treat for the ears as well as the imagination. As students enjoy the vocal presentation, they can also peruse Harry Bliss's hilarious illustrations, filled with quirky details (some of which only adults will catch). This fine feathered feast for eyes and ears will be enjoyed by those with a thirst for adventure.—Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA

BLISS, Harry. Luke on the Loose map. ISBN 978-1-935179-00-9. LC number unavailable. ea vol: illus. by author. 32p. Toon Bks. 2009. Tr $12.95.
PreS-Gr 2–Bliss has created an ideal graphic novel for emerging readers. While his dad is engaged in “boring talk” with a friend, Luke notices a flock of pigeons and chases after them. The birds lead him out of Central Park through Manhattan and across the Brooklyn Bridge to a quiet rooftop. The cartoon panels are so successful at engaging readers that young children do not have to be able to read the text to enjoy the story. Each drawing is filled with humorous details. In one scene children see a man proposing to his girlfriend before Luke leaps over his café table. Though he creates havoc wherever he goes, he remains oblivious to everything but the pigeons he is chasing. Children will enjoy his rambunctious adventure as he takes them on a spirited tour of New York City. In Benny and Penny< /em>, the children are suspicious that their new neighbor has stolen Benny’s pail, so they sneak into her yard even though they know it’s a “big no-no!” Through many misunderstandings, they learn to apologize and make a new friend. The simple text uses basic vocabulary and repetition, making it accessible to emerging readers. Young children will love the graphic-novel format and the sweet, charming illustrations will draw them into the narrative. Fans of Geoffrey Hayes’s popular Benny and Penny: Just Pretend (Toon Bks., 2008) won’t be disappointed with this sequel.–Mari Pongkhamsing, St. Perpetua School, Lafayette, CA

Andrew Wyeth 1917 - 2009

Last week, my friend Andrew Wyeth died.

Five years ago I had spent a few hours with Andy and his wife Betsy. I had written to Andy and we arranged a time in the winter, while I was on a book tour, to meet in Chadds Ford. I brought with me an original New Yorker cartoon for the Wyeths and they laughed out loud when they read the caption (father and son rabbits at a train station, son going off to college. Father hands son a wrapped gift and says to the son “Your mother wanted you to have this for good luck – it’s her foot.”)

The three of us sat in front of a large stone fireplace in a room filled with a cool natural light, much like one of Andy’s paintings. I showed them a batch of cartoons and we talked about all sorts of things, including Betsy’s knitting. She made me a pair of wrist warmers, which I still wear when it’s very cold. They posed for a few pictures (some very silly ones too). After an hour or so Betsy had to leave to run a few errands. I sat with Andy for a while – he spoke of his affection for Edward Hopper. He told me a wonderful story about his first and last cover assignment for The Saturday Evening Post. Betsy did not want Andy to be an illustrator like N.C. Andy told me what a wonderful woman Betsy was for him and how she looked out for him so that he could be free to paint. “Extraordinary” he called his wife.

Andy never worked from photographs. His realism came from direct observations, often outside in the bitter cold. He had a sort of studio in an SUV that would take him deep into the countryside where a driver would, at Andy’s request, pull over, unpack and set up his paints and easel. If you look closely at the surface of his watercolor paper, specifically the depictions of Helga in winter, you can see how the weather beat the hell out of the paper. When I was with him that day, Helga was near by in his studio getting his paints in order. I was very surprised to know this. He asked if I’d like to meet Helga, but thought it might be better to wait until another time. “She can be a little tough when you first meet her” he’d said. We talked for a little while longer about some of the artists we liked and some we didn’t like. He asked if I wanted to see a drawing he was working on and of course I said yes. It was a beautiful graphite study of Betsy’s hands knitting with a wonderful light falling across her fingers. I watched Andy’s face while he described his intentions for a larger tempera -- his excitement was contagious.

Just before I left, Andy showed me a marble bust of John Paul Jones. It was in another room in the house in front of a window that looked out onto the Brandywine River. “Look at that. Isn’t that something?” he said with great pride. He adored that sculpture.

Andrew Wyeth was an artist in the purest sense on the word. He was true to whatever it was that first made him want to make pictures – he never wavered. For 91 years he went back and forth from Chadds Ford to Maine and all he did for nearly a century was to paint some of the most emotionally charged images I have ever witnessed. He kept to himself. His work is an intimate window into a sublime vision of his own humanity. His realism was masterful and captured not only the likeness of his subjects, but often the calm pain just beneath the surface. Even an egg tempera painting of a dilapidated jacket hanging on a wooden door had an undeniable narrative that is somehow alloyed to each and every one of us.

Despite what so many artistically naïve critics have written about Wyeth’s body of work, it did indeed evolve. His early watercolors reminiscent of Homer, to the meticulous egg tempera paintings (Christina’s World) and finally the Zen like watercolors painted with a force and energy that stands alone as a pinnacle of artistic freedom.

It’s fitting that Andy passed in his sleep on a bitterly cold night in Chadds Ford. On the day of my visit he told me he admired winter, respected it. He seemed to have an understanding of the cold, the way it killed year after year.

Harry Bliss

What was your first encounter like with him?

BLISS: It was great meeting Chris and his wife, Jamie Lee Curtis -- two wonderful people; smart, funny, and very, very kind. My girlfriend and I met them for lunch in LA and we talked about all sorts of topics: cartoons, films, yoga, kids, and hybrid cars! Jamie has bought Chris a few of my cartoons and Chris and I have traded cartoons (he draws too).

PLAYBOY: Is there a different artistic process involved when you create illustrations for the various mediums (books, magazines, websites) your work appears?

BLISS: These days, all I seem to be doing is black and white cartoons, like the cartoons in syndication, on my Web site and in The New Yorker, so the process is the same. My work for kid's books is always in color and each book takes six to ten months, whereas I kick out the single-panel cartoons daily. With books, I'm the artist illustrating an author's words, so I guess there's a certain limitation in that, but it's a limitation I'm quite comfortable with, in fact, and I've grown to enjoy the collaboration. As far as the panels go, I generally begin by drawing a scene, say, a couple in bed talking, and once the drawing is finished I begin to imagine a narrative or back story for the people in the drawing -- what are they all about? Imagining the characters' motivations will often inspire a caption. Working this way, I feel, injects a certain sense of humanity in the work, and this is an important aspect I try to achieve in the panels. And sometimes the panels are immature, like me, and that's okay too.

PLAYBOY: Many of the dogs in your cartoons are personified exhibiting just as much angst and strife as the humans in your cartoons. Do you own a dog?

BLISS: I do have a dog. Well, it's my girlfriend's puppy, named Penny, and she's a terrific animal. I have a deep affection for animals and anthropomorphizing them is my way of bringing empathy to their existence.

PLAYBOY: In 2000 you illustrated the cover of the book Madam President in which the authors predicted there would be a female president of the United States within the next decade. When Hillary almost won the democratic nomination this year, you must have felt that your illustration was prophetic. What did you think eight years ago when you drew it?

BLISS: I've always felt that a woman could be president -- even when I'd done that book jacket. Other countries have elected women as leaders, so it has always seemed odd that the United States might be wary of this prospect. I suppose that being a cartoonist and a solipsist I kind of live in a bit of a bubble in that I tend to reject racism and sexism. I know they exist, but I just can't get my mind to admit it. Hillary would have made a great leader. Sarah Palin is another story. I respect her accomplishments, but she's not ready to be president, and McCain really underestimated women in this country by thinking Palin could ease their Hillary pain.

PLAYBOY: Nearly 30 cartoons of yours have appeared in the pages of Playboy in the last decade. Do you have a favorite?

BLISS:My favorite Playboy cartoon is Dude Descending a Staircase, No. 1, which is a spin on Marcel Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase. It's not a typical Playboy cartoon and I give Hef a lot of credit in giving me the OK for that one. Duchamp has always been one of my artistic heroes, even as a kid, so that cartoon stands out. It was difficult to do and when I do speaking gigs and that image shows up, it always gets a big laugh, which makes me happy. Penny is biting my toes, so I have to go now.

This just in: Another starred review for Louise -- from School Library Journal!

*DICAMILLO, Kate. Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken.
illus. by Harry Bliss.

unpaged. HarperCollins/Joanna Cotler Bks. 2008. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-06-075554-6; PLB $18.89. ISBN 978-0-06-075555-3. LC number unavailable.PreS-Gr 2–

A picture book in four chapters in which a thrill-seeking chicken repeatedly leaves the warm security of her henhouse seeking excitement. She is captured by hungry pirates, survives a sinking ship, joins the circus, narrowly escapes a lion, is caged with other chickens, picks the lock with her beak, and liberates her fellow captives. Back home in her barnyard, Louise enthralls her sister chickens with the story of her grand exploits, until all fall asleep tucked safely in their henhouse, having felt the vicarious frisson of adventure. In the nicely patterned telling, DiCamillo ends each of Louise’s escapades with an old hen asking her where she has been. “Oh, here and there,” is Louise’s casual answer. Each new chapter begins with the bold brooder still eager to embark anew. Bliss’s illustrations depict the settings of Louise’s capers in vague antique worlds with various backdrops and in various eras. On every spread, Louise’s bright white feathers and brilliant red cockscomb will stand out and draw the eyes of young readers. Smart choices in book design allow for an oversize book that suits its larger-than-life heroine, and vertical spreads that capture Louise’s circus high-wire walk to maximum visual effect. This is a jolly metaphor for the stages of childhood in which young children long for short-lived independence and exploration always within the reassuring bounds of a secure home and family.–Kate McClelland, Perrot Memorial Library, Old Greenwich, CT

Horn Book review for Louise, The Adventure of a Chicken.

Kate DiCamillo Louise, the Adventures of a Chicken; illus. by Harry Bliss
56 pp. Cotler/HarperCollins 10/08 isbn 978-0-06-075554-6 $17.99
Library edition isbn 978-0-06-075555-3 $18.89
(Primary, Intermediate)

Barnyard hen Louise longs for adventure; as chapter one opens, she has gone to sea, where she is almost immediately captured by pirates and barely escapes being fricasseed, thanks to a fortuitous storm. Back at the farm, she deflects the interest of the other chickens and sleeps “the deep and dreamless sleep of the true adventurer.” Chapter two, however, sees Louise off again, this time to the circus, where she cleverly escapes from a hungry lion; safe at home,=2 0she once more ignores her friends’ questions about her exploits. In chapter three, she heads to the mysterious East, where, having been kidnapped at a bazaar, she manages to free herself and her fellow prisoners. This time, when she returns home, Louise finally shares her stories of adventure, and the book ends with the entire henhouse content, all sleeping that “deep and dreamless” sleep. Louise’s adventures are exciting (and often funny), and each is dramatically captured in Bliss’s sweeping watercolors, which are distinctly his own yet manage to pay homage to such diverse entities as the Dutch masters and The African Queen. But what sets the book apart is DiCamillo’s masterful storytelling, with exquisite pacing, compelling language, and just the right amount of repetition. Despite such crowd-pleasing elements, the story is best suited to more sophisticated picture book consumers, for its true message is not the thrill of adventure but the fulfillment found in the sharing of stories. m.v.p.

This week has been an illuminating one for me. Recently, I was accused by John Rau of plagiarizing one of his gags. I'd like my readers to know that this is not true. I'd never been to Rau's site, nor have I ever seen his cartoon. Ideas are transient, and if you are a creative person, you know that its not entirely unlikely that two people will have the same idea. To think that you, and only you are capable of coming up with an idea is frankly a bit naive. In this instance it appears Rau beat me to the punch. It happens. And will probably happen again. It's a bummer for me, but to write 10 gags a week that play off relevant things happening in the world, sooner or later I'm going to write something similar to something that has been done.

I would imagine if someone were to examine Rau's output, with a bit of time, similarities would occur. I'm sorry that Rau took it personally, and believe that the Jack Kirby attribution issue I recently had probably played a bit of a role here.

As to that, well... its been stated more than once by the NYer, I meant that as a homage to the King. The image I picked was not obscure. It was one of the 4 or 5 iconic pre hero Monster covers Jack did for Marvel, and I looked at it as fair game. If I were to use an image of the Mona Lisa, I wouldn't credit DaVinci. It's assumed the average Joe would know what it was.

In hindsight, given the way Jack has been treated over the years, I can certainly understand his fans coming to the rescue. Know that I too am a fan, and was doing something that I thought brought my hero into the limelight. I never thought for a moment that anyone would think I was somehow claiming that as my own work. I riff of popular culture. Without the refrences, nothing would work.

Harry Bliss

The critics are buzzing about 'Diary of a Fly'

DIARY OF A FLY receives TWO STARRED REVIEWS

July 16

Publisher’s Weekly- STARRED REVIEW
Cronin and Bliss follow up their bestselling Diary of a Worm and Diary of a Spider with a heroine so delightful it would be criminal to swat her. Fly, a purple girl with multifaceted green eyes, chronicles her childhood, from anxieties about the first day of school (“June 7: What if I’m the only one who eats regurgitated food?... June 8: Everyone eats regurgitated food!”) to family issues (“July 23: I visited my aunt Rita today. She’s been trapped on the wrong side of a screen for a week”). Tips on flying, such as “Leap backward when taking off,” combine with grade-school concerns and problems of discipline. Fly’s babysitter, a ladybug, can’t manage Fly and her 327 brothers and sisters (“Mom says we were a lot easier to watch before we grew heads”), so she brings a hungry green frog and sits back to read Teen Bugs magazine. Because flies “beat their wings 200 times per second,” “can see in all directions at once” and have amazing aerial powers, Fly fantasizes about being a superhero, though her friend Spider notes, “Superheroes bend steel with their bare hands. You eat horse manure with your feet.” Bemused readers may be more inclined to agree with Worm, however, who reassures Fly that “the world needs all kinds of heroes.” Cronin’s spot-on humor and Bliss’s uproarious ink-and-watercolor panels make Fly—and this third outing in the series—both irresistible and undeniably super. Ages 4-8. (Sept.)

August

                        Kirkus Reviews- STARRED REVIEW
Worm and Spider have had their say, now it’s time for Fly to take center stage. She frets in dated entries about going to school (“What if I’m the only one who eats regurgitated food?”), recording flying and other lessons, cutting up with her 327 brothers and sisters and especially yearning to be a superhero—despite her friend Spider’s scorn: “Superheroes bend steel with their bare hands. You eat horse manure with your feet.” Bliss contributes another set of cartoons that place small creatures with occasional identifying items of clothing (Fly’s is a hair bow) in a big and not always entirely safe world. It’s still a winning formula, and readers will come away, as from the two previous outings, with sore stomachs (from laughing) and surprising amounts of painlessly delivered natural history—plus Worm’s sage and comforting closing observation that “the world needs all kinds of heroes.”
